In recent times there has been an exponential growth in registrations of Maremma hounds recognized and selected for wild boar hunting. This increase is due not only to the dizzying increase in wild boars present on the national territory, but also to the undoubted and now tested hunting skills of this breed, which proves to be one of the most suitable for the characteristics of the territory in which in most of the cases, wild boar hunting takes place in Italy. Resistance, stubbornness, rusticity, speed, athlete's physical structure, compact and square, make the Maremma a real warrior.
Over the years, attempts have been made to combine hunting skills with a certain physical structure, functional to the performance of the work, which has led to the formation of now very established bloodlines. Without falling into rhetoric, always looking for the perfect mix: the beautiful and the good. However, the component of genetic variability which is fundamental and indeed vital for a healthy continuation of each breed should not be neglected.

Therefore, in the choice of mating, inbreeding that is too close should be avoided: the risk is to pass on and fix genetic defects that can hardly be eliminated in a few years. Let's now see the salient features of the breed standard.
